Free IP / Domain Location lookup — find where a website is hosted

The IP / Domain Location tool is a fast, free IP address lookup that shows you where a website is hosted and which network runs its servers. Enter a domain or an IP and the tool resolves the domain to IP address, performs a reverse DNS lookup, and returns the approximate IP geolocation — country, region, city, ZIP, timezone and coordinates — plus the ISP, organisation and AS number behind it. How the IP / Domain Location tool works

Every lookup follows three transparent steps, and each value is observed directly — nothing is guessed:

  1. Resolve the domain to an IP. The tool performs a DNS lookup and returns the IPv4 address (or addresses) the domain currently points to.
  2. Reverse DNS lookup. It then runs a reverse-DNS (PTR) query on that IP to reveal the hostname the network operator has assigned to it — often a clue to the hosting provider or data centre.
  3. Approximate geolocation from a named source. Finally, it fetches the IP’s registered location and network details from ip-api.com, a free public geolocation service, and clearly attributes the data to that source.

What the results mean

The report combines DNS facts with third-party geolocation. Here is what each field tells you:

IP address

An IP address is the numeric identifier a domain resolves to on the internet — for example 93.184.216.34. It is the address other computers use to reach the server that hosts the site. A domain can point to more than one IP (for load balancing or a CDN), so this domain to IP check may list several addresses.

Reverse DNS (PTR)

Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a hostname, the opposite of a normal lookup. A PTR record such as server42.examplehost.net frequently reveals the hosting company or data centre that operates the address, which is useful for identifying infrastructure and diagnosing mail deliverability.

ISP and organisation

The ISP (internet service provider) and organisation fields name the company that owns or leases the IP — typically a hosting provider, cloud platform or network operator. An ISP lookup quickly tells you whether a site sits on shared hosting, a major cloud, or a dedicated network.

AS number

The AS number (Autonomous System Number, e.g. AS15169) identifies the larger network that routes traffic for the IP. Two different IPs sharing an AS number usually belong to the same provider, which helps you map how a site’s infrastructure is grouped.

How IP geolocation works — and why it is approximate

IP geolocation works by looking up an IP address in databases that record where each block of addresses is registered and, where possible, where it is actually used. Providers build these databases from regional internet registry allocations, network routing data, and other signals. Because the mapping is based on registration and network data rather than GPS, the result is an approximation: it reflects the IP’s registered location — very often the hosting provider or data centre — not a precise physical address, and never the individual person using the connection.

Accuracy varies widely. Many IPs resolve reliably to the correct country and often the right city, but cloud platforms, CDNs, VPNs and proxies routinely report the location of a distant data centre or exit node instead of where the content or user really sits. That is why our tool labels the geolocation as approximate and attributes it to its source: it is a strong indicator of the hosting region and network, not a definitive location.

Accuracy and privacy notes

Please read the geolocation as a guide, not a guarantee. The city, region and coordinates describe where the IP is registered, which is commonly the hosting location or data centre — the physical premises of a site’s visitors are not shown, because an IP does not identify a person. Never use IP geolocation to try to locate or identify an individual; it is neither designed nor reliable for that purpose. The IP and reverse-DNS values are drawn from live public DNS, and the location and network fields are provided by the named third-party service and can lag behind real-world changes.
